It is a bike that perfectly combines fun and excitement in any type of environment — relaxed in the city, but at the same time ready to unleash its sport character with top performance.

A comfortable and confidence-inspiring chassis combines with the famously smooth and powerful Ducati L-Twin engine to provide the most enjoyable riding experience. The balance of new technologies expressed in stylishly finished materials is shaped around the original cool Monster heritage.

At 6ft 3in I didn't find it too uncomfortable.

The riding position is more upright than older Monsters, with lower footrests. It's not cramped, although it's initially disconcerting that you can't see the super-compact headlight unit from the seat.

The wide bars aid manoeuvrability and the mirrors' ability to show the road behind - not always a given with a Ducati. It's a shame, however, that their field of vision is too narrow. The engine is sweet, with the near-flawless fuelling typical of a Ducati.

It revs freely and easily, pulls smoothly from not much above idle, then at 6,000rpm there's a surprisingly strong surge that will be sufficient to excite more experienced riders, all the while delivering a delicious, leonine purr. It shudders through the bike when working hard and smooths out when the throttle is eased, a direct and endearing communication with the rider and the sort of character that will have Monster riders giving their bikes a name.

The chassis is equally effective, with high-quality suspension offering a firm and sporting, but fine, ride quality, accurate and neutral steering and good low-speed balance. It's a pity that the clutch's servo action makes it grabby when feeding in the drive gently, and the engagement point is a long way out in the lever's travel, which will be awkward for those with small hands. Both affect U-turn smoothness in particular, although the bike has a much tighter turning circle than old Monsters.

You get used to the clutch, and if that's the price for the light lever action then so be it, but it could be more novice-friendly. Gear selection is a touch heavy, as well.

Engine 4 out of 5 Pulls well from low revs, I did reduce the front sprocket by one tooth, but that did mean that it felt a bit more strained at constant cruising speed. A real bugger to get at and re-tighten.
